Concussions or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) is caused by an impact to the head resulting in mild to severe injury. Every concussion, regardless of severity, results in an injury to the brain. It is believed that the young developing brain is more vulnerable to injury. Approximately 10% of student athletes experience a concussion every season.
Any student who sustains an injury to the head is at risk for sustaining a concussion.
Symptoms can appear within seconds or a few days and may include:
Diagnosis must be made by a medical provider and parents must provide the nurse with documented diagnosis as well as the medical provided plan of care for return to school activities. The medical provider must clear student for complete return to full activity.

- Headache or a feeling of pressure in the head
- Temporary loss of consciousness
- Confusion or feeling as if in a fog
- Amnesia surrounding the traumatic event
- Dizziness or "seeing stars"
- Ringing in the ears
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Slurred speech
- Delayed response to questions
- Appearing dazed
- Fatigue
- Repeated vomiting
- A loss of consciousness lasting longer than 30 seconds
- A headache that gets worse over time
- Changes in his or her behavior, such as irritability
- Changes in physical coordination, such as stumbling or clumsiness
- Confusion or disorientation, such as difficulty recognizing people or places
- Slurred speech or other changes in speech
